The two volumes of short stories
which comprise The Jungle Books have
been classics of children's literature
since the moment of publication.
The boy Mowgli, brought up by
wolves, Akela the leader of the wolf
pack, Baloo 'the sleepy brown bear'
and Bagheera the black panther, are
familiar friends to children throughout
the world, while the evil deeds of the
tiger Shere Khan have caused many
nail-biting moments.
As well as the exploits of Mowgli,
which have fired children's
imaginations for nearly 100 years, The
Jungle Books contain many other
favourites, like Rikki Tikki Tavi, the
tale of a brave mongoose, and The
White Seal, the story of a seal who
leads his brothers to a better land.
Despite a changing world, the happy
partnership of man and beasts and the
excitement and suspense of the tales
do not date, and will ensure that the
jungle boy and his animal friends will
endure for many, many years to come.

Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay
in 1865, where his father was the
principal of the new art school there.
He lived the first six years of his life
steeped in the atmosphere of the Raj,
speaking Hindustani fluently as a
second language.
He spent his schooldays in England,
then at the age of sixteen returned to
India to Lahore where his father had
secured him a job as a journalist on
the Lahore Qazette. During this period
he wrote and had published a number
of short stories, and gradually built up
a reputation as a writer of note. When
he returned to England in 1889, he
was now something of a celebrity and
his first novel appeared the following
year.
After his marriage to an American
in 1892, the Kiplings settled in
Vermont, where Kipling wrote the two
Jungle Books drawing heavily on his life
in India. He returned to England in
1896 and, with the exception of some
short periods abroad, lived there until
