Meaning and Necessity
A STUDY IN SEMANTICS AND MODAL LOGIC
A distinguished logician develops in this book a new method of semantic analysis. After presenting a detailed critical discussion of the traditional method, according to wKich any expression of language is regarded as a name of one unique entity, Mr. Carnap concludes that the various forms of this method lead to many difficulties and complications. He proposes a new approach which he calls the method of extension and intension. The meaning of any expression is analyzed into two meaning components: the intension, which is apprehended by the understanding of the ^pression, and the extension, which is determined by empirical investigation' Here is the foundation of a new system of modal logic which philosophers and logicians will find valuable in solving many puzzling problems. Five of the author's recently piiblished articles, which serve to clarify his position or^modify earlier views, have been included in a Supplement... Tovább
