Art at Auction 1986-87
Edited by Georgia Fogg
The outstanding success of the 1986-87 auction season is celebrated in the pages of Art at Auction. An upsurge of excitement in the art market saw spectacular paintings, collecdons and works of art change hands at record prices in the salerooms worldwide.
Contemporary art has become a major focus for collectors and museums, as the sales of the Sweeney and Scull collections in New York triumphantly confirmed. Lucy Mitchell-Innes reviews the Scull collections and considers the impact that the sales have had on the international Contemporary art market. Professor Robert Rosenblum provides a reappraisal of the late history paintings of Jacques-Louis David, in the light of the sale of the Farewell of Telemachus and Eucharis, now in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu.
Ann Garrould, Director of the Henry Moore Foundation, contributes a personal review of a selection of works by the sculptor, who died in 1986, and Rüdiger Joppien provides... Tovább

Ann Garrould, Director of the Henry Moore Foundation, contributes a personal review of a selection of works by the sculptor, who died in 1986, and Rüdiger Joppien provides an insight into the life ofjoseph Banks, a magnificent portrait of whom by Benjamin West was sold in London.
In Geneva, the Duchess ofWindsor's collection ofjewellery was sold in aid of the Institut Pasteur in Paris. The proceeds from the sale, which totalled SF74 million (L31 million: 150 million), will be mainly devoted to the construction and maintenance of laboratories for research into retroviruses, cancer and AIDS. Nicholas Rayner discusses the influence of the Duke and Duchess on the style of the 1940s.
There are articles focusing on a number of other major highlights of the season, including a neohthic stone goddess, a spectacular collection of Chinese works of art, a hitherto unknown Mozart manuscript and an early Christian ivory pyxis.
With more than 450 of the finest works of art illustrated in colour and described with prices, Art at Auction is an invaluable visual review of the season at Sotheby's.
