In the late 1960s the trend in fighter design favored the large, tactical interceptor which carried a huge "brain frying" radar up front and two earth shaking powerplants aft. When the total package was put together the aircraft's capabilities were impressive, but the unit cost for each airframe was equally daunting. In an effort to put the brake on the spiraling costs of fighter technology, the US Air Force instigated the lightweight fighter fly-off, a competition hotly contested by all the major American constructors. After several years of exhaustive testing and head-to-head air combat flying, the General Dynamics YF-16 was chosen as the USAF's new lightweight fighter.

Originally chosen by four NATO countries during the "sale of the century" procurement competition fly-off in the mid 1970s, the Fighting Falcon has since gone on to serve with three other NATO members, as well as with the air forces of several African and Asian nations. Its legendary agility and superb reliability record have made the Fort Worth-built fighter a firm favorite with pilots and maintainers the world over.
