We cannot recall from all those innumerable things that adorn our life, one more exciting and more beautiful than a picture, and an art purer than painting. You would rather have a drawing than a piece of poetry, and would readily give up a book for a picture. Painting is told quietly and smoothly and suddenly. On a canvas there bursts out on the spot an image for which a book requires much time and strain to represent, often awkwardly and lacking style. You spend almost the same time and you gain the same bitterness like the writer himself in elaborating his work. What a painter has borne little by little, point for point, and brushstroke after brushstroke appears for the onlooker, completely achieved, in no time. The artist's pains are secretly hidden in line and colour. With a single view you are able to judge him, he may conquer or vanquish you. Painting is naked and unsafe Nature.
