"For anyone who is sensitive to artistic quality, Polish Romanesque art can evoke a more profound and more authentic experience than the art of the same epoch created in a similar historical and geographic situation in other countries. Although only a few works from the period survive, they are of first-rate quality, bright as the stars in the sky of European art. As regards spatial planning, artistic value and content, the Romanesque Wawel cathedrals, the collegiate church at Tum near L^czyca, the bronzé doors at Gniezno, or the carved pillars in the Norbertine basilica at Strzelno, are the result of a surprisingly mature choice among the values offered by the culture that Piast Poland became a part of at the end of the first millenium. The possession of these treasures obligates one to know them, just as we should know our Renaissance or Baroque music, Romantic poetry, the paintings of the second half of the 19th century - ever living sources from which the present age continues...
