This new edition is arranged on exactly the same principles of classification as Roget's originál. The text has been completely rewritten and greatly expanded. There are over 50,000 new entries, the majority of them ld words in new places, and the number of ross references has been increased. The index has alsó been entirely revised. It was early in the 19th century that the idea of a list of words classified according to their meaning came to Dr Peter Mark Roget. His first draft was completed in 1806. In addition he invented a slide-rule, a pocket chessboard; was the government's expert on the London Water Works; wrote for the Encyclopedia Britannica on subjects ranging from Electricity and Electrodynamics to Solid Geometry and Asphyxia; dabbled in mnemonics, astronomy, entomology, geography-and in his spare time took up botany. It was from this that the thesaurus was bora, for the idea came as he listed words in the way in which botanists classi^ glants and their families.
