About this series It is most important nowadays for students to be forward-looking in their biological studies and to be aware of the significant developments which are taking place. However, it is no longer possible for a single textbook to cover the whole of a biology course and remain sufficiently up to date. Furthermore students, both at school and university, are unlikely to have the time or facilities for consulting large numbers of advanced texts and original papers. The Biological Education Committee which has been established jointly by the Royal Society and Institute of Biology is therefore at present taking stock of the entire system of biological education in order to recommend major improvements. With this aim in view the Committee is sponsoring this series of booklets where recent progress has been most significant. 'This type of publication is the obvious style for the future and at this price must commend itself to all teachers and senior students.'

About this book
It is the aim of this book to show that mitosis and more especially meiosis should be considered in relation to reproduction as a whole. Meiosis is not described in the sequence in which it occurs but interpreted by considering first the structure of bivalents at meta-phase 1. For it is hoped that meiosis will pass from a simple halving of the chromosome number to a logical sequence of events through which the genetic information of all sexually reproducing species must pass, if they are to survive and have the variability necessary for evolution.
