The tragedy of Oscar Wilde was not his sexual proclivity, openly flaunted in restaurants and hotels across London, but that he went to law to defend a reputation that he himself had already destroyed.
It was at the height of his fame, when he could have looked forward to years more of the same -whilst still enjoying a catalogue of rent-boys - had he not been persuaded by friends to risk all in futile litigation.
The rest is history. He lost his freedom, home, wealth, health and happiness.
Rodney Legg's play dramatises the moment of that demise, largely through the actual courtroom dialogue. It is brisk and gripping with conversation that was Wilde at his best, and exposed him at his worst.
Three sentences were sufficient to do the damage.
On being asked if he had ever kissed young Walter Grainger, Oscar's reply was pure self-destruction: "Oh dear, no. He was a peculiarly plain boy. He was, unfortunately, extremely ugly."
