Furs, buffalo robes, gold, and land for the taking
were Alberta's riches of centuries past. Today the
immense reserves of black gold — oil — buried
under the soil have ensured the province's
ongoing prosperity. But Alberta's true and
enduring wealth are its 661,000 square
kilometres of striking natural beauty, most of
which it has preserved in wildlife sanctuaries and
exceptional recreational parks.
The spectacular Rocky Mountains which
crown the province's border with British
Columbia are perhaps Alberta's most popular
retreat. Here Banff and Jasper national parks
offer such priceless sights as the emerald waters
of Lake Louise, or the majestic Banff Springs
Hotel perched high above the dazzling Bow
River Valley. Many exciting adventures await the
eager mountain traveller: in particular, the
frequent sightings of the abundant wildlife.

of Lake Louise, or the majestic Banff Springs
Hotel perched high above the dazzling Bow
River Valley. Many exciting adventures await the
eager mountain traveller: in particular, the
frequent sightings of the abundant wildlife.
Forests of aspen, spruce and balsam fir,
punctuated by the still waters of hundreds of
lakes reputed for excellent sportfishing, extend
throughout the northern region. Fantastic wildlife
and the endangered North American buffalo
inhabit this area, where much of the way of the
pioneer is still alive. In the southeastern and
central Badlands, bizarre geological formations
harbor mysterious pictographs carved on stones,
as well as hundreds of dinosaur fossils and other
paleontological treasures, all of which await the
curious mind in search of the region's prehistory.
Folklore and legends enrich Alberta's
southwestern corner, where whiskey traders once
corrupted the powerful Blackfoot Indians and
cattle ranching replaced herds of roaming
buffalo.
The great pioneer spirit that brought Alberta
to life two centuries ago can be found in the
province's extraordinary historic parks and many
festivals, whose cultural roots represent nations
the world over. Calgary's annual Stampede —
the world's largest rodeo show — and
Edmonton's Klondike Days — a two-week-long
celebration of the gold-rush days — attract
international attention. This colorful past meets
a thriving present in Alberta's two major cities:
Edmonton to the north, the province's capital,
and Calgary to the south, the site for the 1988
Winter Olympics. Both cities display a rare and
delightful combination of progressive
architecture, refurbished historical buildings and
well-maintained park areas, which residents and
visitors alike enjoy.
Alberta captures this uniquely beautiful prairie
province in a poetic and informative text and over
90 stunning photographs which celebrate the
spirit of Alberta's hardy people and fascinating
land-. Vissza
