This important anthology for the more advanced student of philosophy, history, and political science focuses on fundamental social issues —man and society; social and political values; state, power,and authority;iaw and rights; political obligation; and the ideal of justice —with reference to their broader philosophical context and implications.
Selections included are from writings of the major figures of the past and from those actively working today. These works are developed within nine major perspectives of philosophy: classical realism, positivism, liberalism, utilitarianism, idealism, communism, pragmatism, existentialism, and analytic philosophy. The arrangement of the articles-the older selections followed by more recent ones-permits study of a historical as well as an analytical approach.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Robert N. Beck (Ph.D. Boston University) is currently Chairman of the Department of Philosophy, Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts. He has published numerous scholastic articles in his field and several books, including Perspectives in Philosophy (1961) and a revision of E. S. Brightman's An Introduction to Philosophy (1963), both published by Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc.
