One of the paradoxes of the twentieth century is that a man can be uprooted like a rice seedling from its familiar, protective nursery and transplanted into a big, strange, foreign field. Flown halfway around the world, dropped down in another time, climate and culture, a man is expected to walk off an aeroplane and function as usual. Without the loving care of the farmer and without the company of other seedlings of the same stock, the humán transplant must either adapt and flourish or wither and perish. It is a great tribute to the humán race that most people in this position manage to carry on somehow. Indeed, many revei in the novelty of the experience.
