The Rijksmuseum
in Amsterdam is above ail famous for its collection of i7th-century Dutch paintings. The names of Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Frans Hais immediately corne into mind. These great masters are represented here by some of their most renowned pictures together with many other major artists of the "golden âge". Their work reflects the différence between art in the North Netherlands and other European countries in the same period: a predominantly public character and courdy style elsewhere, here a pre-vailing private character conforming to the taste of bourgeois patrons who had no need of glamorous elegance. Geographically small, I7th-century Holland was extra-ordinarily rich in men of talent and even genius. Many artists specialized in one or two fields in which they then developed the highest degree of technical mastery. Out-standing examples of these various catégories are repro-duced here, portraits, genre, still life and animal paintings, land- and seascapes, etc.

In 48 colour plates this volume gives a wide représentation of Dutch painting in the I7th century, which was one of the really great epochs of pictorial art, preceded by a few notable specimens of North-Netherlandish masters of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and concluding with a few examples of i8th- and içth-century Dutch art and of foreign schools. The accompanying analyses facilitate the récognition of aesthetic qualifies in the paintings and give an insight into the development of Dutch art at the time.
Further volumes will at a later date pay attention to the other important depattments of the Rijksmuseum, such as the sculpture, Dutch décorative art, the extremely rich Printroom collection, and Oriental art. Vissza
