The atrium, in its modern enclosed form, dates back 200 years. It re-emerged as a favoured design concept in North America in the late 1960s, in the form of large-scale glazed volumes for both public and private use. Richard Saxon is an architect partner m Building Design Partnership, the multi-discipline practice which has created many of the United Kingdom's atrium buildings. Since the 1970s he has made a continuing study of the atrium concept and set down its principles in what is now the standard work Atrium Buildings, published by Architectural Press in 1983; second editiQn®l'986. He lectures across the ; UJi, 'Europe and Japan and has. written widely-' ¦ on the subjecC recently contributing to the new UK Code of Practice on fire safety design for atriufjn buildings.
