First there is an introduction to rockets, past and present, including the Space Shutrie. Then readers climb aboard and take off. Orbiting around the Earth, they are shown the four major environments—the land, the oceans, the atmosphere, and the living biosphere. Then readers travel with the Apollo, Viking, Mariner, and Voyager space ships to a lunar valley carved by lava, the ancient river systems on Mars, an enormous hurricane on Jupiter, and new glimpses of the extraordinary rings of Uranus, icy Neptune, and tiny Pluto. Arriving at the end of the solar system, the space travelers look back to see that the Sun is merely a star among billions of stars. They learn about the different kinds of stars, including black holes, and about the gigantic islands of stars called galaxies. The voyage ends with specularion on the unique conditions that make life possible.

Throughout this breathtaicing trip, the worlds we visit are constantly compared with Earth, so that what might have been incomprehensible becomes understandable. Boxed sidebars provide fascinating details of actual space flight and of each planet in the solar system.
The NOVA Space Explorer's Guide is an exciting introduction to space travel for junior astronauts.
Richard Maurer, freelance science writer and exhibit designer, won the 1991 American Insti-mte of Physics Science Writing Award for Airborne: The Search for the Secret of Flight. He has also written two books for the NOVA series: Junk in Space and Adventures in Science. Among other space projects, Mr. Maurer has selected photographs from the 32,000 taken on lunar missions to create a Smithsonian Instimte traveling exhibit. Mr. Maurer lives and works in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
