A new and dynamic era in the development of capitalism has arisen out of the economic crises of the 1970s and 1980s. Previous crises have resulted in restructuring — such as closing surplus plant and unemployment — within the nation state. What is new now is that restructuring has taken on a global dimension, with the investment of capital on a global basis being the most significant phenomenon of this process.
The dynamics of global restructuring are producing a new socio-territorial reality which in turn demands a new theory of spatial development. The original essays collected in this book provide some of the elements for such a new theory.
While they discuss a variety of issues central to restructuring and its impact, they have in common a commitment to the idea that adequate explanations of the contemporary world, and its constituent territorial units (countries, regions, cities) can only be developed from an approach that places in the forefront the relationship of global... Beginning with an introductory chapter which sketches the contours and dynamics of the new socio-territorial world, the book incorporates studies of restructuring in the automobile and electronics industries; the consequences of female proletarianization in South East Asia; the implications for regional development of the incorporation of Mexico and Malaysia in the world economy; the internationalization of commercial capital and the development of financial centres; and the connection between global restructuring and urban politics in the United States.
This book makes an important contribution to our understanding of both the processes of global restructuring and their consequences for urban and regional development. It will be of particular interest to advanced undergraduates, graduate students and professors in sociology, economics, politics, human geography, planning, urban and regional studies, and development studies.
