RICHARD BAKER'S LONDON is a
fascinating mixture of streets and shops,

concert halls, where a wealth of bizarre
and unexpected stories are hidden behind
its well-known exterior. Here are the
Camden Catacombs, where pit ponies
used to live deep beneath the north

Richard Baker immortalised the song
Two Little Sausages5; the hotel where
Kaspar the cat is always a guest at dinner
parties for thirteen. . . .
Beautifully illustrated with specially
commissioned photographs and unique
archive material, this highly unusual and
entertaining celebration of the city by one
of Britain's best-loved broadcasters will
appeal to Londoners and lovers of
London alike.
Richard Baker was born and educated in
north London and developed an affection
for the city at an early age that has lasted a
lifetime. He graduated from Cambridge
and served in the Royal Navy during the
Second World War before returning to
London to work as an actor and a
teacher.
He joined BBC Radio in 1950 as an
announcer on the Third Programme and
in 1954 moved to television where his
was the first voice to be heard on the new
BBC Television News. Over the next
twenty-eight years his face became
synonymous with BBC News, but since
then he has been involved in a variety of
programmes including BBC TV's
'Omnibus5 and 'Last Night of the Proms';
'Baker's Dozen', 'Comparing Notes' and
'Music in Mind' on Radio Four and
'Melodies for You' on Radio Two. He is
also in constant demand for the
entertainments of music and words that
he gives throughout the UK and abroad.
In 1976 he was awarded the OBE for
services to broadcasting.
Married, with two sons, Richard Baker
now lives in Hertfordshire.
Richard Baker's other books include The
Magic of Music (1975), Richard Baker's
Music Guide (1979) and Mozart (1982).
