ROYAL COURT WRITERS SERIES
To celebrate 25 years of the English Stage Company and 21 years since
Sublication of the first Methuen Modern Play, Eyre Methuen and the
Loyal Court Theatre have joined forces to publish the plays in the
Royal Court's 1981 season. Published to coincide with each
Ereduction, the new Royal Court Writers Series fulfills the dual
inction of programme and play script. It was the Royal Court which
first staged John Osborne's Look Back in Anger in 1956, and to this day
the theatre has the same commitment to new writing for the stage, a
commitment shared and often echoed by Eyre Methuen's play
publishing over the past two decades.
RESTORATION
Edward Bond has set his new play in the eighteenth century and called
it4a pastoral'. It comes complete with an arranged marriage, a restless
wife and a family 'ghost', and it draws pointed contrasts between life
above stairs and life below, between the town and the country,
between the landed gentry and the...
