Zhe Mathematical Pmciples of the Zkeoty of Wealth
by Augustin Cournot With Irving Fisher's Original Notes
Although Cournot's classic work originally appeared in 1838, for nearly forty years it was completely ignored by economists. It was not translated into English until 1897 when the Macmillan Company published a translation by Nathaniel T. Bacon to which Professor Irving Fisher contributed an introduction and a bibliography of mathematical économies up to that time. The book was reprinted in 1927 with the addition of Professor Fisher's "Notes on Cournot's Mathematics," but, as Fisher explained in a Foreword, "the mathematical method has become so general in economic and Statistical studies that no attempt has been made to bring the bibliography up to date by adding the many items which would be necessary." This printing is based on the 1927 édition with the bibliography ending in 1897, as before.

In this volume, Cournot sets forth not only theoretical researches but shows how he intended to apply to them the forms and symbols of mathematical analysis. It is believed that he was the first writer to apply mathematical method to economic problems with any great degree of success. Cournot's original comprehensive Bibliography of Mathematical Economies is inclüded in its entirety in this reprint.
