This publication presents a selection of40 ofthe most successful EU research projects and initiatives from the Sixth Framework Programme for Research. Between them, the projects cover almost every aspect of our lives: from our health, our environment and the food we eat, to the way we travel and how our energy is produced. Crucially, they have provided us with new knowledge, technologies and solutions to help tackle somé ofthe biggest challenges facing society today. In many cases, these research results have an immediate practical impact - by improving consumer products, preventing or curing diseases or by changing the way business works. Furthermore, by linking up the best European scientists in their respective fields, these projects are laying the foundations for research networks that will last long after the projects have ended, therefore helping to reduce fragmentation and the duplication of effort in European research in the future. All of them are paving the way to create and reinforce, in an open and coordinated way, the establishment of a European Research Area, which will combine the best of National and Régiónál research programmes, EU Research initiatives and existing European research facilities.
