A founding father of the Impressionist movement, Renoir combined classical and
modern techniques to produce a remarkable body of work. Illustrated with 129 full-color reproductions, this volume examines his life and the extraordinary artistic vision which has made him one of the most beloved artists of all time.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), perhaps the most recognizable of the Impressionist portraitists, was a painter who combined classical and modern techniques to portray a singularly intimate vision of the late-nineteenth century Parisian life of leisure he came to know so well.
At age fifteen, the young artist trained as a porcelain painter, and with his successful earnings enrolled in the well regarded Parisian painter's studio, Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He studied under Charles Gleyre, side by side with co-pupils Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Frédéric Bazille. Together, these four painters developed and evolved what would come to be called the Impressionist movement.
Mutually inspired, they painted directly from the subject—landscapes, figures at rest and at play out-of-doors—capturing the momentariness of the ever-changing appearance of nature. Their numerously varied works captured, with broadly painted brushstrokes and vivid arrays of color, the illuminated immediacy of a moment in time.
Renoir, whose charm and ease aided him in moving in all social circles, particularly the upper class, was able to earn a living as a portrait painter while gaining a reputation as one of the exceptional artists in the Paris of his time. His depictions of individuals and groups in sumptuous settings on the river or in a cafe are most memorable, while his late series of paintings of bathers are even more compelling.
As a colorist and portrait painter, Renoir's contributions to the highly influential Impressionist movement were substantial. His concentration on the figure and on the more pleasing aspects of life invited the viewer into his remarkable vision with sensitivity and pleasure. He remains to this day a beloved artist to aficionados and lay people alike.
