The student who enrols at one of the worldwide Outward Bound schools signs up not merely for a course in wildemess survival but also for an adventure in self-discovery. Founded in Wales during World War II largely through the driving energy of one man, Kurt Hahn, Outward Bound grew from a sea school for cadets into an all-round wildemess school operating more than 30 centres in Europe, North America, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand. Nearly three-quarters of a million men and women of all ages have sought the challenging combination of rugged environment and group living, participating in river, sea, mountain and desert expeditions — on foot, by boat, skis, bicycle and even dog-sled.
For two years Renate Wilson researched the story behind the school's phenomenal success by travelling to many of these centres, reading the literature, interviewing founders, instmctors and students, and joining in their programs. The result is the first historical overview in more than 20 years of the intemational Outward Bound movement, including a comparison of the guiding philosophies behind the European and North American models, and insight into the African and Asian experience. It follows the development of the much-admired training techniques designed to stretch mind and body, as well as the crowning features of an Outward Bound course — the group and solo expeditions. There are chapters on Outward Bound's imitators and critics, its special courses for delinquent and handicapped youths, and its changing attitudes to sexism.
Renate Wilson is a Vancouver-based freelance journalist known for her indefatigable research. Having been a member of the Alpine Club of Canada since 1949, and formerly a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, she was particularly attracted to the Outward Bound story.
