The art of inlny provides one of the most interesting and notable chapters in the history of European cabinet-making. This purely decorative technique was developed and perfected during the Renaissance, and some of the Italian examples of that period are masterpieces. In Hungary, the craft developed earlier than in the other countries north of Italy; there are splendid examples of Hungarian inlay, dating from the early sixteenth century. The art of inlay survived especially in the towns which were formerly a part of northern Hungary where there is inlay not only on the stalls of the churches but also on numbers of chests, cupboards and door-leaves which have been preserved. Particularly beautiful are the massive Renaissance stalls from the church at Nyírbátor which bear the date 1511 and were most probably made by Italian masters.
