Born in Leyden in 1606, the son of a
miller, Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn
is today considered to be the greatest
painter to have emerged from the Dutch
school of painting which flourished from
approximately 1580 to 1700. His name
has become synonymous with the great-
est achievements in art and his work is,
without doubt, the most sought after by
collectors and museums.

taken from collections throughout
Europe are here reproduced in full
colour and they constitute the nucleus
of themes around which this extraordi-
nary artist created such an impressive
oeuvre: self-portraits, portraits of men,
women and children, group commis-
sions such as the Night Watch and the
Syndics of the Clothworkers Guild, and
his most famous religious and genre
