REMBRANDT
(1606-1669)
Rembrandt is an artist with enduring appeal, whose work reveals enormous breadth of perception and a profound understanding of human nature. Despite the large number of paintings, drawings and engravings he produced, his pictures are always imbued with a continuous, restless energy. His paintings are characterized by a forceful use of chiaroscuro to evoke the mystery and drama of his chosen subject, while the rich browns, reds and golds of his later work reveal his genius as a colourist.
Although Rembrandt's art is universal and timeless, it reflects many aspects of the society in which he lived. His portraits of individual patrons and large-scale group works, such as the celebrated Night Watch and Anatomy Lesson of Dr Tulp, provide a vibrant record of the wealthy Dutch burghers who commissioned them. Yet he also depicted Holland's humbler citizens— beggars, peasants, butchers and nursemaids-with accuracy and compassion.

An appreciation of his native countryside is evident in Rembrandt's numerous drawings and etchings, which capture with delicate precision the waterways and flat, open landscapes around Amsterdam. Even the biblical works betray a new philosophical approach to their subject matten The artist is not merely illustrating the Scriptures, but offering his own interpretation of the emotions underlying specific incidents and relationships. Through his brushstrokes the melancholy Bathsheba becomes a real woman, not simply an Old Testament symbol.
The illustrated introduction to this volume contains an analysis of the artist's life and times, providing a useful context for the forty-eight colour plates which follow. Each of these has been chosen to represent a specific period or aspect of Rembrandt's work and is accompanied by a detailed commentary. Vissza
