33 Rehabilitation of the Cardiac Patient
Proceedings of the llird World Congress of Cardiac Rehabilitation, Caracas, October 20-23,1985 Editors: N.K. Wenger, Atlanta, Ga.; D. Almeida-Feo, J. Rosenthal, Caracas XVI + 192 p., 25 fig., 18 tab., hard cover, 1986. ISBN 3-8055-4339-5
This book examines the basic components of comprehensive cardiac rehabilitation and features state-of-the-art summaries of all aspects involved in the comprehensive approach to rehabilitation. The 20 contributions, invited presentations from plenary sessions and symposia of the llird World Congress of Cardiac Rehabilitation and authored by internationally recognized authorities, are designed to provide the reader with a core curriculum in the rehabilitation of cardiac patients. Owing to the predominance of coronary heart disease in cardiac morbidity and mortality, the rehabilitation of coronary patients is emphasized.
The first of the book's four sections is devoted to secondary prevention after myocardial infarction and coronary bypass surgery. Papers review early intervention and late management with various drugs, and the control and reduction of major risk factors such as hyperlipidemia, smoking, and hypertension. The second section concentrates on the role of diagnostic procedures in coronary rehabilitation. Papers examine exercise testing for diagnosis and assessment of prognosis and risk. Echocardiography, radionuclide techniques and coronary angiography are also considered. The following section focuses on psychosocial aspects of rehabilitation, and examines behavioral modification following myocardial infarction, and quality of life issues. The final section looks at the rehabilitation of subgroups of cardiac patients: pediatric and adolescent patients, elderly patients, and patients with left ventricular dysfunction and heart failure. Cardiac rehabilitation in different countries is reviewed. Papers in this section also discuss long-term comprehensive rehabilitation during return to work and in the community phase.
By providing state-of-the-art summaries of all aspects of comprehensive care of the cardiac patient, this volume provides valuable and up-to-date information for cardiologists, rehabilitation medicine specialists, rehabilitation personnel, and agencies dealing with the rehabilitation of cardiac patients.
