REALLY RURAL
AUTHENTIC FRENCH COUNTRY INTERIORS MARIE-FRANCE BOYER
At the close of the twentieth century modern taste is turning away from steel, plastic and synthetic fabrics and seeking out the natural shapes, textures and materials of country furniture, utensils and linen.
In France the old rural ways of life have almost disappeared, but there are places, far from the big cities and the tourist trails, where they can still be found. Marie-France Boyer, with her sensitivity for the extraordinary in the everyday, has traveled to several isolated regions of France, seeking out these interiors of country working life. She describes them, and the people who live in them, with an intimate knowledge, and presents a series of wonderful photographs - most taken especially for this book -of kitchens and stove corners, living rooms and bedrooms, odd souvenirs and family mementoes.

The country people who follow the traditional ways are now in their seventies and older. They use the bowls, baskets and smoke-blackened pots that their parents and their grandparents used before them - still calling them by their local names. Their homes are working interiors, functional and mostly very frugal. Ancient family tables and long-case clocks jostle with refrigerators and televisions; plastic lace and 1950s wallpaper are as popular as striped mattress ticking, flowery eiderdowns and wooden beams. Candlesticks stand next to oil lamps, both replaced by electric light in the 1940s.
A unique record of French rural life as it used to be, the book also provides information on sources for the regional pottery, enamelware, linen and furniture that can still be bought today
With 200 illustrations, 173 in color
Ok the jacket, front-. Stove corner, interior in the Hautes-Alpes. Photo Pierre Masclaux; back: French country objects and fabrics. All photos also reproduced in the book. Vissza
