Electricity supply systems have made increasing use in recent years of the computer, particularly in planning, for the design of power stations and systems, for the simulation of phenomena, and for the evaluation of experimental results. Utilizing the available process control computers and modern theories of automatic control there is now a tendency to employ computers for control tasks in load dispatching centers and power stations. This trend, owing to increased demands with regard to the security of the supply and the economics of generation and distribution of power, is the expression of a real need. Because of the complexity of power stations and generating stations and the difficulty of converting the criteria into a computer algorithm, the adoption of this computer application has only been effected after considerable hesitation.
In September 1971 a symposium organized by the Brown, Boveri Group Research Center and attended by over 100 experts from Europe and the United States was held in Baden, Switzerland. Its purpose was to provide a forum for scientists to report on recent advances within the field of power system automation. The present volume contains all of the papers presented at the symposium as well as the complete text of the discussions that followed.
Edmund Handschin studied in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich, from 1960 to 1965. He subsequently went to the University of London where he did post-graduate work at the Center of Computing and Automation of the Imperial College of Science and Technology, and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1969. He became a staff member of the Brown, Boveri Research Center in 1969 and, since 1970, has also been a part-time Lecturer on Automatic Control at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zürich.
Dr. Handschin is a member of the Swiss Automatic Control Council and the Swiss Society of Electrical Engineers.
