Előszó

This Book of Readings is compiled to meet the needs of students taking a course in Modern English Lexicology which forms part of the curricula of Foreign Language Institutes, Teachers' Training Colleges and Philological Departments of Universities. The book is meant as a supplement to the textbooks on lexicology published in our country but, primarily, it is an attempt to supplement A Course in Modern English Lexicology compiled by the same authors. This accounts for the choice of reading matter and the structure of the book. Both professors lecturing on English lexicology and students taking up this course have been acutely aware of the necessity of a more detailed study and analysis of the papers and booklength monographs presenting different approaches to the problems referred to in the textbooks on lexicology. Unfortunately, however, in many colleges and institutes the books are not available; hence, the seminar classes are largely confined to the review of the topics as discussed by the textbook and in the lectures. Readings in Modern English Lexicology is to serve as a guide to those who wish to attain a more complete view of the crucial problems of this branch of linguistics.

In selecting the texts for this book of Readings in Modern English Lexicology the compilers set before themselves a more modest goal. They were guided by the desire
