Early one cold morning in February a young woman's body is found in one of the 'garderobes' amid the ancient Roman ruins of Old Sarum, a few miles from Stonehenge - the apparent victim of an accidental fall.

And the body of an elderly tapister is found in the nave of Exeter Cathedral - dead, it is presumed, from natural causes.

They are three ostensibly unsuspicious, unrelated deaths. But when Scotland Yard Chief Superintendent Richard Jury joins forces with Divisional Commander Brian Macalvie and aristocratic amateur sleuth Melrose Plant they discover that beneath the external appearance of innocent death, there may be a stronger - more sinister - connection.
