ailed during his Hfetime (1861-1941) as the living embodiment of Indian culture and its greatest spokesman, Rabindranath Tagore's influence knows no geographical or spiritual boundary. Selections from his most significant writings — including poetry, short stories, fables, letters, drama, and philosophy — were made by Dr. Amiya Chakravarty, his literary secretary from 1926 to 1933. Dr. Chakravarty was formerly professor emeritus of comparative oriental religions and literature at Boston University. Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high,
Where knowledge is free; Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;
Where words come out from the
depth of truth; Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection; Where the clear stream of reason
has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by the'e into ever-widening thought and action — into that heavpn of freedom, my Father,
let my country awake.
