Fülszöveg

This book has two aims. The first is to give a full picture of the development of European architecture during the last 2,500 years, using as illustrations over a hundred of the most beautiful and most important buildings of every European country. The second is to stress an inherent element of architecture which has hitherto been neglected by even the most valuable illustrated works on the subject - colour. All one has seen in the past were gradations of light and shade which cannot recapture a building as a whole. Architectural works, however, depend largely, even principally, on colour. The natural colour of the stone or brick, the same colour when transformed by ever-changing effects of light, the colour of murai paintings, mosaics, stained-glass windows, the colour of the surrounding landscape and sky - all these are the blood which flows through the cold flesh of building-structure and warms it into life. Consequently all the pictures in this book - from San Vitaié in Ravenna to Hagia Sophia, from the Court of the Lions in the Alhambra to Hampton Court - are in colour. They have been chosen with great care and integrated with the text so that through them the reader can trace not only the entire history of European architecture but alsó the exciting history of humán development which they reflect.
