Published half a century ago, Queen Victoria won immediate popular success and was hailed as a landmark in biography. The wit and astringency of Eminent Victorians have mellowed in this endearing portrait of England's first respectable' monarch. Strachey's study of her youth, with its Whiggish sympathies and the unseen influences of Baroness Lehzen, King Leopold and Báron Stockmar; of her totál surrender to Prince Albert; of her relations with Melbourne, Peel, Palmerston and Disraeli, may cast an image almost as legendary as the pious icon it replaced. Yet the book prompted Virginia Woolf (once she had swallowed her envy) to write: In time to come Lytton Strachey's Queen Victoria will be Queen Victoria, just as Boswell's Johnson is now Dr Johnson. The other versions will fade and disappear. It was a prodigious feat.' And Harold Nicolson, after detailing the overwhelming mass of material facing the biographer, commented: 'To produce a book in which there is no trace of artificiality... Tovább
