As a prelude to the VlIIth European Congress of Cardiol-ogy in 1980 psychiatrists, cardiologists, epidemiologists, and consultant physicians from Europe, America, and Asia gathered together in the Château de Maffliers to dis-cuss a topic which seldom seems to receive from medical research the attention it deserves - namely, psychosomatic cardiovascular disorders.
Anxiety and prolonged emotional tension - commonly referred to as "stress" - can be regarded as causal or pre-cipitating factors in the majority of ail purely functional cardiovascular disorders. With Rosenman's Type A be-haviour pattern, however, in which stress is a prominent feature, a purely psychic element has been introduced for the first time into the ranks of the acknowledged coronary risk factors. The area between these two poles - purely functional disorders on the one hand and purely psychic disturbances on the other - is populated with a whole host of semantic, pathogenetic, epidemiological, and diagnostic problems, some of which the Maffliers symposium suc-ceeded in defining more accurately. From the point of view of therapy, the beta-blockers have proved extremely versatile drugs which can also be used to advantage in the treatment of functional cardiovascular disorders. The opportunities which the beta-blockers thus offer in everyday medical practice, the differentiation between their indications and those of other drugs, and the role of psychotherapy were the main topics dealt with in the thoughit-provoking panel discussion at the end of the symposium.
