Project English is a three-year English
course which takes young teenagers from
beginner to intermediate level.
Its key features are:
A grammar-based analytical approach. In Project English 1
and 2 grammar is treated as a problem-solving activity, and
the pupils are encouraged to work out grammar rules for
themselves. In Project English 3 greater weight is given to the
functional side of language which provides an opportunity to
revise grammar from a different angle.
¦ Project work. Through project tasks, pupils are given the
opportunity to talk and write about their own lives, and to relate
the language they have learned to their own experience.
Hi Entertaining topics. Project English 3 is based on the idea of
The Canterbury Tales. A group of young people run a company
called Canterbury Holidays and entertain each other by talking
about their experiences and travels.

A new approach to language learning
Tom Hutchinson is the Associate Director of
the Institute for English Language Education
at Lancaster University, where he is mainly
concerned with teacher training courses.
m Hutchinson taught in schools for a
mber of years and has given teacher
training seminars in many countries around
the world. In 1986 he was awarded the Duke
of Edinburgh's English Language prize for
