Tom Hutchinson taught in schools for a number of years and has given teacher training seminars in many countries around the world. In 1986 he was awarded the Duke of Edinburgh's English Language prize for Project English and in 1992, for Project Videó. Tom Hutchinson is the Associate Director of the Institute for English Language Education at Lancaster University, where he is mainly concerned with teacher training courses. Project English is a three-year English course which takes young teenagers from beginner to intermediate level. The key features of the course are: ¦ A grammar-based, analytical approach. In Project English 1 and 2 grammar is treated as a problemsolving activity, and the pupils are encouraged to work out grammar rules for themselves. Through the project tasks pupils are given the opportunity to talk and write about their own lives, and to relate the language they have learned to their own experience. ¦ Entertaining topics. Project English 3 is based on the idea of The Canterbury Tales. A group of young people run a company called Canterbury Holidays and entertain each other by talking about their experiences and travels. The humorous vein in Project English 1 and 2 continues in Project English 3 as the pupils follow the exploits of the comic characters, Carstairs and Carruthers, who are engaged in a race around the world. ¦ This Student's Book is accompanied by an interleaved Teacher's Book, a Workbook, a set of two cassettes, and Project Videó.
