Now in 1996, the Prix
Ars Electrónica is
presented for the
tenth time as an annual
international forum for com-
puter supported creativity in
involving art - science - en-
tertainment. The Prix Ars
Electrónica 96 has drawn
nearly 1000 entries from 38
countries for the competi-
tion categories Computer
Animation, Computer Music,
Interactive Art and World
Wide Web. The 55 works
selected by four juries of
international experts repre-
sent examples of leadership
in the creative use of digital
media. Naturally, the pre-
condition for this selection
is the definition of the crite-
ria for evaluation and selec-
tion. Issues relating to theo-
ry and aesthetics in compu-
ter art need to be re-exa-
mined and restated in the
context of the rapid digital
transformation that has
been taking place over the
last few years. This means
that new definitions need to
be attempted.

ausgewählten 55 Arbeiten
repräsentieren ein Spitzen-
feld in der Gestaltung der
digitalen Medien. Mit dieser
Auswahl ist naturgemäß die
Festlegung von Beurtei-
lungs- und Auswahlkriterien
verbunden, denn angesichts
des rapiden digitalen
Wandels der letzten Jahre
stellen sich in der
Computerkunst Fragen in
bezug auf Theorie und
Ästhetik neu. Somit gilt es,
einen neuen Definitionsver-
such zu unternehmen.
