In no other capital of Europe has the past been so completely preserved as in Prague. Despite a history marked by defeat and disaster, the city's stones speak eloquently of every period in its evolution. Now deep underground, vaulted basements were once the ground floor of merchants' houses who by the 9C had made the city "richer by commerce than all others", while the many-arched Charles Bridge over the broad Vltava is only the greatest of many monuments from the time when Prague lay at the heart of the Holy Román Empire. There is magic and mystery (Rabbi Loew's Gólem, the court of eccentric Emperor Rudolph II), a sense of the absurd (Hasek's Good Soldier Svejk, Kafka's Josef K), as weil as the clear-headedness personified by John Huss and Presidents Masaryk and Havel. The light-hearted Prague loved by Mozart is best experienced in Spring, when Petiin Hill foams with orchard blossom. But this is a city that charms at all seasons. Vissza
