The purpose of this Guide is to offer users of the New Yorl(-New Jersey region's commercial trade facilities a well-packaged, one-stop reference source to the region's port, airport and intermodal facilities and its service products and service providers.
The accent here is on service. Any guide of this magnitude, both in depth and breadth of the informatiori provided, must take special care to assure that its presentation is clear and usable and, in effect, serves its users, A buzz-word for this special care is "User-Friendly." The major goal of this Guide was to present information in a way that users of the Port can maximize their understanding of all the trade and transportation capabilities of the bi-stateregion, and can access this information for timely and beneficial uses.
As such, the Guide consists of six packaged sections: Marine Facilities, Aviation Facilities, Intermodal Transportation, Guide to Importing and Eiqjorting, General Directories, and General Information.
These sections, when appropriate, contain overview maps of the region with the re spective facilities in context, as well as detailed physical descriptions of the facilities appropriate to each section. These are pre sented in the form of land use maps which can provide Guide users with a more complete sense of the size and capabilities of each facility. This is done for the port's marine facilities, aviation facilities, and its Intermodal transportation facilities. Also, each of these sections contain all directory listings specific to each facility category. For instance, in the Marine Facilities section. Guide users will locate directories of steamship lines, maritime services, steamship agents, nautical mileage charts, directions to the facilities, and specific information-related to the industry category.
The Aviation and Intermodal Transportation sections are treated similarly. This was done to localize the user's search for information to the specific area, or category, of interest.
The Guide features a general table of contents, which lists each major section. Each major section begins with its own table of contents, which lists the specific contents of each section.
The three sections named Guide to Importing and Exporting, General Directories and General Information employ the same packaging philosophy as the facilities sections described above.
Guide to Importing and Exporting is a variation on an old idea The thinking here was to provide more than a step-by-step guide
to importing and exporting by providing a detailed narrative of how the import/export process works as well as descriptions of the documents involved. Also, in this section we've ventured to provide information and listings on the region's vast import/ export capabilities and service providers, including listings of trade educational services, banks with international departments, foreign consulates, US Chambers of Commerce abroad and, of course, descriptions of international trade services offered by the Port Authority, and much more, in this section Guide users will also find a bibliography of key trade publications prepared by the staff of the Port Authority Library.
The General Directories section contains all directories which apply to more than one major section area. For instance, this section contains a directory of government agencies, custom house brokers and freight forwarders, warehouses and warehouse operators, export packers, and general services.
The General Information section serves to round out the Guide It provides listings of special hotline numbers, listings of port holidays, hazardous materials information and an index of Guide advertisers. We hope that you find the Guide useful in accessing the incredible array of trade and transportation services over the next two years. The Guide is designed to maximize its utility as a business tool, first and foremost, and
also to provide rather _
convincing evidence that
the NY-NJ Port is clearly America's number
one full-service port.
We suggest you familiarize yourself vrith the various tables of contents and how we've used color to make important distinctions. Just a quick look at these elements should easily suggest the utility and time savings our new design offers.
