This work, by one of the leading representatives of a powerful, humanistic tradition in political philosophy, consists of some twenty papers written over the past quarter-century. The ideas and arguments extending throughout the papers converge on a concrete political theme—the polity of the United States. "Whether he is discussing Aristotle's theory of friendship, Plato's understanding of Socrates, or Rousseau's Emile, Cropsey's analyses are sensitive, illuminating, and always scholarly."—Alan Wertheimer, Perspective
"Cropsey's discussion rests on a vast knowledge of the philosophic origins of modernity in Locke, Hume, and others and the ancient traditions with which they broke It possesses an inner unity and is a real mirror of a modest and penetrating mind, one of the rare original minds of the day."—Allan Bloom, University of Toronto Vissza
