Waliy Herbert led the pioneering team which made the historic surface crossing of the Arctic Ocean by dog-sledge - 3,720 miles from Alaska to Spitsbergen via the North Pole - in both time and distance, the longest sustained sledging journey ever made. He has, on foot, mapped over 45,000 square miles of the Antarctic Continent; retraced Amundsen's route to the South Pole; hitch-hiked 15,000 miles through South America; travelled extensively in Lapland, Spitsbergen and the west coast of Greenland; lived amongst the Polar Eskimos of Northwest Greenland and travelled over 3,000 miles with them. He has written six books - including Eskimos in the International Library series. He has been awarded the Livingstone Gold Medal of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society, the Founder's Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society and a Polar Medal and Clasp. The polar regions are no longer the oppressive presence that breathed fear into the hearts of primitive peoples, but regions of an over-crowded planet that present a challenge to the young scientist and pioneer at least equal to the challenge of lunar exploration. This book looks at man and his relationship with the polar regions from Stone Age times to today when it is possibly within man's capability to convert the Arctic into an ice-free, productive region. Such interference with nature might prove disastrous - we do not know - but it is certainly one of the most pressing and intriguing of all polar mysteries. Vissza
