Poisons and drugs - both damaging and beneficial - have always played an important part in people's lives. Sorcerers, priests, alchemists and "witches1' all used poisons for their own ends, whilst doctors, pharmacists and chemists today work with them and investigate their effects. The purpose of this richly illustrated book is not only to look at the cultural history of poisons, but alsó to explore the occurrence, extraction, application and control of animal, vegetable and mineral toxins, as well as the development, production and use of synthetic poisons. The book telis of the use of poison as a murder weapon and of cases of mass poisoning, and describes the work of famous toxicologists.
