PITTSBURGH is the work of an artist, and a fearless one at that. Using a 35mm camera instead of palette and brush, photographer Lynn Johnson has captured the spirit of this great city of three rivers. No shot was too difficult or too remote for her to reach. She scrambled over the roofs of unfinished biuldings to photograph workers laying steel girders into place. She balanced on a bridge's suspension cables to take pictures of painters at work. She sensitively photographed the people of Pittsburgh, revealing through her work the winning personalities of her subjects. In each of the faces that Johnson photographs is stamped an ethnic blueprint from which the strong cultural backbone of the city was built.

A Pittsburgh native and award-wiiming photo-journalist, Johnson has spent years exploring the city. She knows firsthand its complexities, diversity, and beauty. Its people. Its communities. Its ethnic and religious heritage. Its architectural blend of old and new. Its strengths in education, business, and the arts. Its colorful history.
Johnson's PITTSBURGH features 19th-century cable inclines; die glass-and-steel architectural achievements of Pittsburgh's Renaissance; blue-collar neighborhoods; the opulence of Heinz Hall and the prestigious Duquesne Club; and the city's many parks, rivers, museums, and schools. Creative and daring, Johnson is able to depict even the most familiar scenes in vibrant new ways.
The photographs are complemented by selections drawn firom the words of people who have knovra Pittsburgh. Industry magnates like Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Prick. Artists and authors like John Kane, Gertrude Stein, and Willa Gather. In addition, informational captions accent many of Johnson's photos.
From high noon at Point State Park, to late-night reflections of Pittsburgh's skyline in the Monongahela River, Johnson shows an intimacy with her city and its people that is unparalleled. PITTSBURGH is a masterpiece—the work of an artist at her best.
