PISSARRO
by Raymond Cogniat
The most hallowed traditions concerning the lives of independent artists are embodied in the life of Camille Pissarro, which can be considered almost a prototype: birth into a family of fairly prosperous merchants; definite signs of an emerging talent while still a child; opposition to and then acceptance of his talent by his parents; conventional schooling; a struggle against poverty; a demanding role as a paterfamilias with a large family. There may not always be room for adventure and personal color in difficult lives, but that does not make the artist's courage to remain faithful to his ideals any less admirable. More than that of any other artist of his time, the story of Pissarro's life is the human and aesthetic history of Impressionism; that is to say a struggle that was renewed daily and never really ceased, even when times were relatively pleasant and prosperous.

Raymond Cogniat succeeds in reconstructing simultaneously the events of Pissarro's life and the successive stages of his art: his friendly relations with men considerably younger than he, first with the Impressionists and later with Seurat; his support of the most liberal social movements of his epoch, indeed even of anarchy; the constant search for the rare and hard-to-find collector who might purchase his art; the family life, affectionate and almost patriarchal in spite of the lack of funds. The sum total of his existence is shown through a succession of revelations, just as an Impressionist painting is composed of small and separate spots of color juxtaposed.
Raymond Cogniat, who has previously given us numerous perceptive writings on art and artists, in this volume shows us how Pissarro's life was interrelated with the lives of his contemporaries and influenced them, and makes clear the significance of both its artistic and its human dimensions.
