Here, in 135 beautiful full-colour photographs, is a new and unique portrait of Britain. It aims to mingle the familiar with the unusual, to set beside the subjects that every visitor knows photographs of places that are not on every travelier's itinerary but which, it is felt, still represent the real Britain, places which may be sought out by those willing to take their car, or boát, or horse a little way off the beaten track. Sometimes, too, the well-known spots are viewed from a less well-known angle, hopefully adding freshness to the appearance of an over-exposed vista or building or village scene. Sometimes, too, the well-known spots are viewed from a less well-known angle, hopefully adding freshness to the appearance of an over-exposed vista or building or village scene. The book is divided into six chapters, each of which deals with a separate feature of the landscape:- the seashore, with its immense variety of beaches, headlands, fishing harbours and wild rocky promontories; the countryside, with its mountains, moors, valleys, dales and downs, and the way climate and season affect that countryside; the monuments that dot the land - castles, cathedrals, country houses, great gatherings of stones that remain the best-established links with history; the villages and country towns, which many consider as the heart of Britain; the inland waters, with their lasting appeal - rivers, lakes, waterfalls; and London town, ancient and revered capital, to which all roads lead and where most travellers in Britain find themselves sooner or later. Each chapter has a short introductory text, and the pictures, which hopefully represent a fair cross-section of these British Isles (though never will any two persons agree on that), are accompanied by captions intended to combine description with information in such a way that the book may serve a dual purpose - that of helper to the visitor before he travels, and of nostalgic reminder when he has returned home.
