PICASSO THE BLUE AND ROSE PERIODS by Denys Chevalier Picasso is the artist for all time, one who has inspired more exegesis on his work and his life than perhaps any other. For better or worse, what we know of Picasso as an individual is what he has let be known. As for his work, posterity will decide its merits, for much of the contemporary praise sung to him is more harmful than good; far from assisting us toward a just appreciation of his work, it does nothing but thicken the mystery surrounding Picasso's oeuvre and leads to confusion. In these pages that trace the life and work of a painter twenty years old at the beginning of this century, one has less the impression of watching the commencement of a career unfolding before our eyes, than of watching a film of a whole life, complete. In effect, the work of the blue and rose periods which for another artist would have demanded decades of reflection and formulation was produced by a very young man, in a span of hardly more than... In effect, the work of the blue and rose periods which for another artist would have demanded decades of reflection and formulation was produced by a very young man, in a span of hardly more than four years. And what years they were! He was intrigued constantly by his travels and abrupt moves from one place to another; crossed by the storms of passión; troubled by relatíve poverty; depressed by the drama of his friend Casegemas' suicide; inspired by faithful friendships (in particular, that of Max Jacob); and entirely dominated, in the final analysis, by the irrepressible demands of his art. Whatever the future evaluation, this is a life story that rivals fiction. The text was written by Denys Chevalier, French art critic and author of books and monographs on Zadkine, Clave, Poliakoff, Condoy, Poncét, Francis Bott and Berrocal. He is the creator and head of the « Jeune Sculpture Association » in Paris and consultant for leading museums in Francé, Switzerland and England. Vissza
