Picasso is acknowledged as one of the great revolutionary modern painters. The fact that he was equally revolutionary and influential as a sculptor is less widely appreciated. Many of the most radical forms of modern sculpture, those that are unique to the twentieth century, can be traced back to Picasso.

Published to accompany the major exhibition at the Tate Gallery, this handsomely illustrated catalogue explores in detail for the first time the relationship between Picasso's sculpture and painting, showing how his importance as a sculptor has been underrated and how sculpture was a key influence in other areas of his work. It ^ suggests that Picasso's way of seeing was fundamentally sculptural - even in his painting he constantly stresses the three-dimensionality and monumentality of its forms.
The catalogue includes stimulating essays by the selectors of the exhibition, Elizabeth Cowling and John Golding, plus illuminating contributions by the artist's son, Claude Ruiz-Picasso, and other leading international scholars. Together with the detailed entries on all the exhibited sculptures, paintings and drawings, which are grouped into sections corresponding to the distinct modes of Picasso's work as a sculptor, these provide many fascinating new insights. One hundred and sixty-eight works are discussed and all are illustrated in full colour. This publication is sure to prompt a long-overdue reconsideration of the sculptural work of this most inexhaustible of twentieth-century artists. Vissza
