A PRAEGER WORLD OF ART PROFILE
Picasso
by PIERRE DAIX
Picasso, more truly than any other artist, has revolutionized the nature of art in our time ; his achievement is inséparable from his personality and the events of his life. Pierre Daix, Picasso's close friend and associate for many years. founds his < tudy of the artist securely on these events and on the history of P'r^sso's time. M. M. Daix's superbly illustrated book provides an analysis of Picasso's work as a painter and sculptor, incorporating many works that have only recently become accessible to the public. The author also offers an illuminating discussion of Picasso's thought and creative method, based on material culled from the writings of those poets — Max Jacob, Apollinaire, Reverdy, Eluard — who were closest to the artist. Throughout the book, text and reproductions of the works being discussed are integrated to give the reader fullest understanding and pleasure. Pierre Daix's research has led him to modify the generally accepted chronology of Picasso's works, and he présents here a new interprétation of the artist's évolution from 1905 to the beginnings of Cubism. M. Daix also offers a re-evaluation of Picasso's development during the ten years between the beginning of World War I and the launching of the Surrealist movement — years of expérimentation ranging from classical explorations of ancient themes to the most original and abstract innovations of his career. Finally, the author provides the first history of Picasso's work of the 1950's and 1960's — a period in which the artist has explored every domain of the plastic arts, and in which he conceived his "Las Meninas" masterpieces in his current sériés, "The Painter and his Model." THE AUTHOR : Pierre Daix, the author of several novels and works of literary criticism and aesthetics, is Editor-in-Chief of the journal Lei/res Françaises. Vissza
