English Studies Series Series Editor: Ronald Mackin This series, which is being developed under the guidance of Ronald Mackin, is intended for those who need to understand and use English in theirstudyof a particularsubject. Each book in the series deals either with one subject (e.g. Biology) or a group of allied subjects (e.g. Physics, Mathematics, Biology and Applied Science). The basic plan is as follows: 1 To give the student a selection of unsimp/ified passages relating to his subject of study, taken from established text-books, journals, andsoon. 2 To provide copious notes dealing with the main grammatical constructions (in order to make constant reference to a dictionary unnecessary) and much of the vocabulary. 3 To provide exercises to test comprehension of the passages and to give practice in the use of common/y occurring grammatical constructions and vocabulary. 4 To provide a Key to the exercises either in a separate volume or at the end of the book. It will be seen that this plan allows for the maximum amount of priváté study, so that many students will be able to use the books without a teacher. Wherever possible, however, the book should be studied with the help of a teacher, and the plan therefore takes into consideration the problems faced by the English teacher who may have little or no knowledge of the subjectmatter. The assistance takes the form of (1) guidance concerning thepronunciation oftechnical terms, and (2) the provision of answers, in the Key, to the Comprehension exercises. The teacher needs no assistance in dealing with the structural problems, but his task will be made easier by reference to the notes and to the Key. Vissza
