Phineas Finn is the second of the six Palliser novels.
(The others are Can You Forgive Her?, The Eustace
Diamonds, Phineas Redux, The Prime Minister and
The Duke's Children.) Each of these novels is an
entirely self-contained narrative, but together they
make up a huge but coherent composition, in which
Plantagenet Palliser (later Duke of Omnium) and the
other recurring characters experience the effects of
the changing years, so that the reader is given a rich
record of the fashions, slang, manners and politics of
two decades. Phineas Finn is the story of the career
of an Irish IVLP. As he climbs the rungs to political
success, aided by his enormous success with 'the
Sex', we get a lift attendant's view of English
political society'. More seriously, the questions
Phineas has to ask himself about honesty, inde-
pendence and parliamentary democracy are ones we
are still asking today.
